Since its inception in 2000, JAM has enrolled an average of 60 students each school semester.
Every week students from 4th to 8th grades receive 3 hours of music instruction from master traditional musicians/teachers and teacher assistants.
Small groups of 7 to 10 students receive
instruction on the acoustic instrument of their
choice - fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass and dulcimer. JAM's afterschool program includes regional music history, music theory and traditional dancing.
Field trips and artist residencies round-out the
broad historical perspective enjoyed by JAM students.
Students are encouraged to participate in local
and regional competitions at fiddlers' conventions when they're ready. Several students have won awards at the world-renown Galax Oldtime Fiddlers' Convention. Others have formed their own bands. |
